Awarding XP & IP

Experience Points are awarded in four parts: Time, Encounters, NPCs, Problems Resolved. At the end of each game session calculate how many points to award, either as a group or individually.

Time

How much time did the PCs spend during this adventure in-game? How many days, etc

Points Value: 100 per day

Encounters

An encounter includes all types of opponents the PCs faced in battle.

Points Value: creatures 200, beasts 300, monsters 600

NPCs

How the PCs interact with the NPCs is equally as important as how well they fight. They have missed important clues by not interacting with an NPC or interacting poorly.

Points Value: negative interactions 100, positive interactions 300

Problems Resolved

During an adventure PCs will come across any number of problems. How these problems are resolved can determine the outcome of the entire session.

Points Value: negative outcome 200, positive outcome 400

AWARDING INGENUITY

This can be tricky. As a DM you don’t want to show favoritism but there are always players who act in-character better than some of the others. The key is to make the awarding of IP an encouraging experience for all players. How a DM does that is left to them. Below are a few examples of what a DM is looking for to award. And exactly how many points they award is likewise left to them.
