The Dragon Lords & The Old Gods

In Agondar there is only one species of dragons. They range in earth-tone colors from a reddish brown to dark green. Their features are diverse and distinct from one another, but all are descendants of the Sacred Mother.

Here, under the authority of Xanthias, dragons are often mounted and used much in the same way as horses and other creatures. It is not uncommon to see Dragon Knights riding into battle astride full-grown dragons. But to become a Dragon Knight one must respect and revere their mount. Both must be bound to one another.

Agondar is also home to Dragonoids, humanoid dragons who evolved from magical offspring. During the war against Xanthias whole armies of Dragonoids were wiped out. Those who survived were aided by Harrandor, who opened a portal for their escape. Today they are rare and endangered.

ARALLA

Aralla did not fight for dominion over dragonkind. In her wisdom she brought all dragon lords together in unity. She arranged the nations as they are and crowned each lord unto their given heritage, which was agreed upon by all who warred upon one another in order to secure peace throughout all of Agondar.

Xanthias rose to power after a time of neglect on part of the dragon lords, making it possible to raise armies of massive forces and usurped Aralla’s power. A special weapon of unknown power and origin, the Spear of Majesty, was used against the dragon lords and Aralla was forced to surrender. Subsequently, all dragon lords were imprisoned. Aralla herself was thrown into a pit of torment beneath the Dragon Throne.

Today the title Dragon Lord is reserved for officials of high ranking order who rule over the nations as regents of Xanthias, the Supreme Dragon Lord.

Aralla has a sagacious face anointed with flexible spines that resemble whiskers. Her horns sweep back from her nose and brow, echoing twin frills that adorn her long neck. Her wings start at her shoulders and trace down to the tip of her tail, letting her fly with a distinctive rippling motion as if swimming through the air. Her eyes resemble pools of molten gold.

Special Actions – all dragons share these actions.

Multiple Attacks Per Round: Aralla can use her Awestruck Fear to make three attacks: one with her bite and two with her claws.

Awestruck Fear: any creature within 100 ft must roll against their Intuition. Failed rolls result in being frightened with a -2 to attack rolls.

Shape Change: a dragon can take human form when it chooses. No limitations.

Gust of Wind: using its wings the dragon causes a powerful gust of wind to repel its attacker/s, causing +4 injury and a roll against their Immunity. Fail results in unconsciousness.

TREPH

Dragon Lord Treph was one of the most ferocious fighters during the Great Dispute (the war in which Aalla united all of dragonkind). He was instrumental in clearing his domain of opposition and securing a life of peace for his subjects. His mate was Kallah, who perished in a battle with Tielo. Treph swore vengeance, but the war waged on and when Aralla was able to broker peace he was never able to keep his oath.

The odor of sulfur and pumice surrounds Treph, whose swept-back horns and spinal frill define his silhouette. His beaked snout vents smoke at all times, and his eyes dance with flame when he’s angry.

SCARLETTA

Scarletta was a true hero in her time. During the siege of her dragon fortress in The Great War, in which thousands of her subjects were taking shelter from an attack of overwhelming forces, she sacrificed her own life to give survivors enough time to make an escape. Amongst the dragon lords resisting Xanthias she was the only casualty. Soon after her demise Aralla surrendered and the dragon lords were imprisoned.

DONDRA

Dragons in flight are a dangerous threat. Most are capable of flight, but Dondra is exceptional. Her ability to rise above the clouds in quick bursts means she can use the sky to her advantage. During The Great War Against Xanthias, Dondra struck from clouds like bolts of lightning, utilizing her breath to stop forces in their tracks. Her brevity and resolve were both tested when the wizard took her subjects captive and demanded her surrender in exchange for their lives. Dondra had seen what Xanthias could do with the Spear of Majesty and scores of troops at his command. She surrendered, and then watched as the wizard eradicated her subjects in an act of diabolical betrayal. Dondra broke free in a fit of grief and rage. She pursued Xanthias but was not able to exact justice. It is said she changed shape to humanoid form and went into hiding, though none have ever confirmed these rumors. It is more likely she is imprisoned with the remaining dragon lords.

NIVEN

Very little is known of Niven. In the war against Xanthias he patrolled the Great Kallah River and sent many warships to their doom. The various peoples of his domain kept few records, and much of what was written was destroyed when Xanthias came to power and issued his edicts. What we do know of Niven comes to us through oral traditions. It is said that Niven was the most elusive of the dragon lords, and the most difficult for Xanthias to capture. Only after Aralla surrendered was he taken, and only after years of tracking. In short, Niven was the last of the dragon lords to stand his ground.

TIELO

The campaign in the Arabah Desert proved to be challenging and, more so, it was detrimental to Xanthias. To bring all of Agondar under his rule he had to conquer Tielo’s domain and subjugate its people. The region itself sits directly to the south of the Dragon Throne. Battles were engaged at night to avoid the torment of the sun. This made them predictable.

Tielo’s lair was his domain’s massive canyon, where he could spring from to attack the invaders. He waged guerilla warfare against fablers and any number of forces who were sensitive to bright light. For a time it seemed Tielo would be the hero to overcome Xanthias.

During this time a discovery was made which shocked the dragon lords. Xanthias had seduced the dragonoids and was compelling them to “resist the tyranny of the dragon lords and take back their freedom”. Some fell for the scheme and with overwhelming numbers they helped to bring the desert under the rule of Xanthias. Although he fell in battle Tielo survived and his domain was swallowed by a new regime.

To the residents of the nation of Tielo now, history is not without a sense of irony. Soon after Xanthias established himself as Supreme Dragon Lord, the dragonoids, believing they would be rewarded, were instead “dismissed” and forced to look to Harrandor for a means of escape.

THE ANUNNAKI & THE IGIGI (PANTHEONS OF OLD GODS)

There exists, or existed, many Old Gods. They were ruled over by eight in various positions of office with Anu as their king. While there is currently no list cataloging all we do know of the primary eight.

ANU

Anu belongs to the oldest generation of Old Gods and was originally the supreme deity. Consequently, his major role was king. He alloted functions to the other gods and took several consorts. Anu was rarely worshiped, veneration was instead devoted to his son Enlil.

Anu assigned his sons Enki and Enlil to oversee everyday labors throughout his kingdom. The gods themselves toiled and the work was hard. Enlil made it known to his brother that he intended to rebel and usurp his father. In an attempt to appease his brother and reduce the difficulty of work Enki proposed the bioengineering of laborers, combining the DNA of the gods with that of the ancient indigenous peoples of the planet Zo’ras. After a great deal of trial and error it worked. In the tongue of the Old Gods, Anunnakian,  they called this new subspecies “Hu '', which has since become “Human”.

Because the Old Gods were immortal they did not procreate abundantly. Their numbers were limited. Whereas humans were quite prolific. In a short time the human population reached staggering numbers the gods were threatened by.

Enlil used this as an opportunity to lead a rebellion against his father and wiped out whole cities of humans. Enki led forces against his brother and attempted to save the humans, but was not successful. Eventually Enlil was able to overcome Anu’s forces and mutilated his father. But Enlil’s reign was short-lived. Enki avenged his father, overthrew Enlil, and became the new king of the gods.

Enlil despised his father for favoring his brother Enki, and during his rebellion he killed Kishara and mutilated Anu.

ENKI

Enki was sometimes called the “creator god” because of his association with bioengineering humans. As a result humans bear striking physical similarities to the Old Gods, a key difference being the size and height of the gods at roughly 12 ft. Six generations of gods passed before Enki “created” humans. What this suggests is that the gods are not immortal, but rather long-lived, at least in comparison to humans. As such, the human population expanded much quicker than the gods expected, some of whom would have exterminated them all together.

Before the Old Gods vanished, and sometime long after Enlil’s rebellion during the reign of Enki, they gave birth to a seventh generation of gods who became the new rulers known as the Igigi. Enki did not fight the change. He saw it as only natural that one generation replaces the previous. Instead he made preparations for the Igigi to stand against the dragons, who were on the rise and would soon pose a threat.

NINHURSAG

Ninhursag was assigned to the mountains and was responsible for the mining operations and acquiring gold ore, which the gods collected in abundance and left behind. She is fierce and imposing, carrying a mace and accompanied by her pet lion whom she calls Urmah. In battle Urmah is armored and fights with her.

Ninhursag was courted by Enki and Ninmah, who both competed not only for her hand, but for the right to “create humans”. It can be credited to Ninhursag that Enki so wanted to impress her he was able to accomplish what Ninmah was not. She was also key during his reign in persuading him over several decisions that benefited humans.

Although she and Enki did have an affair that produced a daughter (Ninsar), she later spurned him after discovering him with numerous consorts.

NANNA

As “god of the moon” Nanna was responsible for putting the moon in the night sky, which was once a large piece of debris from a nearby celestial body that had collided with Nibiru, the homeworld of the Old Gods. The details of how he achieved this task are lost but it is surmised that he manipulated the course of the debris and it was pulled into the gravity well of Zo’ras.

His father is Enlil and it is surmised, yet not confirmed, that he and his father led forces against the Sacred Mother after Enlil had been dethroned by Enki. This was perhaps another scheme of Enlil’s to lead a new rebellion against Enki but it failed, as by this time the Sacred Mother and all of her offspring were more than a match for the Old Gods.

UTU

Utu was called the “judge of the gods”, referring to his position in both civic disputes and as enforcer of “divine justice”. His sister is Inanna, the Queen of Heaven, and both played roles in quelling an uprising in the domain of Ereshkigal, the proverbial underworld called Erṣetu. After one of Enlil’s attempts to exterminate humans (by floodwaters!) Utu delegated rescue efforts.

INANNA

The “Queen of Heaven” ruled over matters of war and political power. Her title may have been proverbial (or not) but her position of authority was legitimate. She ruled jointly with her brother Utu. If Anu (and later Enki) was the “seat of power” over all the gods, they were the judiciary branch.

She had a brief love affair with King Gilgamesh and gave birth to Ishtanna, who herself became queen after an attempt by the Igigi to kill her. The attempt was a misunderstanding. Inanna wanted her daughter to take her place with the Igigi. Ishtanna chose to embrace her father’s lineage and usurp the throne from the man responsible for killing him.

It is possible Inanna intended her daughter to replace her as “Queen of Heaven” as both she and Utu had positions of power with the Anunnaki and the Igigi. They were aging. In any case Ishtanna became queen of Uruk and avenged Gilgamesh.

ERESHKIGAL

“Queen of the Underworld”. Erṣetu was the name given to the system of caves under the Cedar Mountain, where the gods mined for gold ore. It went deep into the bowels of Zo’ras where it became extraordinarily hot. Conditions for workers were horrid. The gods who worked there first demanded better conditions which partially led to Enki bioengineering humans to take over.

Ereshkigal was sent to oversee the humans and their work. She was sympathetic and compassionate to them, but there was little she could do about the conditions they worked in. They continued to grow in numbers, conditions worsened, and soon their rebellion started. In Ersetu the rebellion was not so much put down as it had just grown and moved out of the caves and caught the attention of Enlil.

Ereshkigal, the sister of Inanna, was punished for the uprising. Her sister said nothing in her defense. Enlil “cursed” her with the appearance of a harpy and sentenced her to an eternity in Ersetu, where she remains.

Ereshkigal later killed her sister and hung her corpse on a hook in the underworld for everyone to see. Inanna was given the Water of Life, resurrected, and rescued from Ereshkigal’s possession.

BAAL’AMON

This god is an alien of unknown origins, although scholars believe his species was once at war with the Pleiadians in their dim past and before they were part of the collective making up The Elohim.

Baal’Amon established a citadel on what would later be known as the Island Nation of Telmun. The new community called itself Dida Alsulta, and after some time of building forces Baal’Amon led them against the Igigi. The timing was poor. Instead of battling the Igigi the Dida Alsulta was forced to join them against the Sacred Mother and her offspring. When the Igigi broke off and mysteriously vanished, Baal’Amon and the Dida Alsulta fled back to their island. It is assumed the dragons pursued and Baal’Amon was further forced to find a new means of survival or face death. Whether or not the option of abandoning Zo’ras altogether is not known. Some have speculated he may have been stranded on this planet.

We do know that he did indeed survive, as centuries later temples dedicated to his worship were established. During the reign of Aralla, Baal’Amon proved a constant thorn. Temples would arise somewhere in seclusion but soon attract attention due to the violent nature of the cult’s rituals requiring child sacrifice. This same cult has spread to the stars giving rise to speculation that Baal’Amon and the Dida Alsulta have some means of interdimensional travel between Zo’ras and wherever they travel to. If the Pleiadians know they have not shared that information.

ISHTANNA

The queen of an ancient city whose name was lost to the Annals of Agondar after Lord Xanthias was enthroned, Ishtanna is the daughter of Inanna and King Gilgamesh. During her most formative years she was not aware of her royal heritage, nor the identity of her parents. She was raised by her grandmother on her father’s side, Ninsun. Only after the king was assassinated did she learn who she was, when officials abducted her and left her to die, crucified in a pit of vipers.

A vision of Inanna appeared before her. She was told of who she was and this unlocked her divine traits. She freed herself and vowed revenge against those who murdered her grandmother Ninusn and her father to usurp his throne. But it was many years later that she kept that vow.

Over several decades, in which she retained her youth and beauty, numerous kingdoms and some of the Igigi, were allied against her. And in her quests she aided the helpless where she could.

After she kept her vow and took her father’s throne Ishtanna ruled for over a thousand years, at peace with the Dragon Lords. When the Great War started she stood against Xanthias at great cost, losing her kingdom. What became of her is unknown, though it is likely she still lives, waiting for an opportunity to rid the Realm of Xanthias.

SAMAEL

The King of Hell gives no quarter of mercy. Appointed there by the Unnamed God who created Hell in the Eternal Darkness, Samael has origins dating back to the Anunnaki. The Annals contain no information as to why Samael gave his allegiance to the Unnamed God. Historical scholars speculate many reasons, including coercion, debt, and forced labor. There does abide a theory that Samael was conquered by Queen Ishtanna who banished him to the Eternal Darkness where the Unnamed God rescued him.

Samael rules from his Crimson Throne, a source imbued with the power the Unnamed God granted the Ruler of Hell. That may or may not be true, but scholars lean toward it being factual for little more reason than the fact that Samael is never found outside Hell, remaining in close proximity to the throne. When Hellspawn turn fugitive he dispatches demon hunters.

Samael guards The Abyss somewhere in the bowels of Hell, where the minstrel who rebelled against the Unnamed God is kept prisoner. The many who followed the minstrel are chained nearby. From time to time there comes word to Samael of their escape. Most have been returned. But from The Abyss there is no escape.

Samael was first a man of human appearance, but he now takes the appearance of a lion-faced serpent and he is often coiled around the body of his beloved Queen Lilitu.

Devour: while an opponent is captured by the snake it will widen and dislocate its jaws to slowly swallow its prey. Many Hellspawn have met a gruesome end in this way.

LILITU

"The First Woman" is a title ascribed to Lilitu, who was bioengineered by the Anunaki to bear the first generation of "Hu". For their purposes she had to be strong and long-lived. The woman they created was more than what they hoped for and her will was more than they could handle. She defied the Old Gods and escaped their custody, giving up her children whom she had never bonded with.

Lilitu wandered alone for a time. When she encountered Samael he took her in and prized her above everything in his considerable possession. He valued her for more than what her body could give him.

Because of her great strength Samael made her his primary general against the Anunaki and later against the Igigi. She took great delight in exacting revenge for having been created as nothing more than an incubator for the entertainment of gods.

When Samael was defeated Lilitu would not give him up. She suspected her fate would be just as bad as his and would not spend an eternity without him. She made his fate her own and was forced to watch the Old Gods curse Samael's appearance from that of the man she had fallen in love with to that of a lion-faced serpent by means of genetic manipulation.

Somewhere in the Eternal Darkness the Unnamed God found them, and again she would not give him up. She sits now on the Crimson Throne.
